The paper presents the results of research on the state of engineering and engineering education in Russia. Authors describe the ways to improve engineering education as a key component of the technological modernization of Russia on the example of training competent engineers. The requirements to the system of quality assessment of competent specialists in the field of engineering and technology are considered in the article.
